Privacy matters in public affairs

June 29th, 2009

Mars and Venus PeaceMedia coverage jumps on political scandals, especially when sex is involved. Public interest is so focused on the emotional feed of what we identify as celebrities. It’s natural then for popular interest to leech onto powerful emotional secrets of our entrusted elected officials. I think privacy matters when it comes to public affairs. Former governors Spitzer(D-NY) and Sanford (R-SC) blow up in news feed as medication to the mass that we as a people are far from perfect. The question on my mind: who are any of us to judge? Former governor Blagojevich (D-IL) also got tons of media coverage in his bribery attempts. Drawing a line between the two is arbitrary as sex, money, and drugs are so closely related. Politicians also feel obligated to step down from office when shit hits the fan. It can be difficult to recover from political tensions that weigh down strong enough to cut legal ties. Affairs are definitely a troublesome matter, but this becomes a private matter. The public can definitely push to manage personal emotions better rather than dive into the realm of officials. Remember that our emotional ties with political figures runs as a ballot cast. There are better stories to tell in this world such as stories about individuals who achieve positively. Integrity runs high which might make a resignation feel appropriate, but our judicial system allows for courts to decide guilty or innocent. A marital affair is the emotional burden of a family unit. The national media can stay far away from coverage, and let the state, family, and individuals heal on their own terms. There are psychologists to help with emotional wounds. Individuals serving in group function move much farther than outsiders latching onto the emotions of others.

The New York State capitol is chaotic right now. Republicans and democrats act in huddle as Governor Patterson casts blame on the two groups. It can also be added that Patterson has the lowest approval rating of any New York State governor since the establishment of these same ratings. I understand that it’s often times difficult to reach agreement, but I think a better method of political micromanagement will bring about a compromise. If politicians and the public tune into higher understanding of emotional psychology, both as individuals and in group function, forward progress can again be made. When we reach into ourselves instead of others, the greatest depths of energy are reached. Leave it to libertarian belief to sell Albany what’s good. New York is a great state and amazing things happen here. I just think Spitzer staying in office after his personal scandal is better for the current State of New York and its residents than Patterson’s current blame game.

We can all forget about it and move on. We all have history. The courts can decide if a politician is unfit to serve to benefit the greater good. A resignation in my opinion is a cry for attention. We are human, and we make mistakes. We can serve ourselves better for higher function if we all keep cool and chill out. A social leech sucks the life out from any party. We can govern ourselves, but popular belief in western culture chooses to latch on to others for emotional energy and money. This may be what separates socialist-liberals from neo-conservatives. It’s going to take more energy to heal our own psychological wounds than we can get from comfort in a shallow bay.

Google accepting requests for Google Voice invites!

June 25th, 2009

For those of us who missed the first round (or weren’t awesome enough to get a Grand Central account way back when), Google is providing another opportunity.  It would seem that Google is expanding the userbase they are using to test Voice by allowing users to opt in to receive an invitation.  To throw your hat in the ring, head to https://services.google.com/fb/forms/googlevoiceinvite/ and fill in your name and e-mail then go sit by your inbox and feverishly F5 until you see an invite show up.. as we will all be doing.

Hopefully we’ll have an invite, if we do – expect an in depth feature run down to follow shortly.

Reported Attack Site! Firefox + Google = The New Internet Vigilantes? (no thanks)

June 24th, 2009
attacksite_0.jpg

ATTENTION WEB SURFER: WHERE ARE YOU GOING?!?!

Is basically the message I was greeted with after restoring a Firefox session following a version update for a few of my saved tabs on sites I visit regularly.  It seems that with its most recent version, Firefox has teamed up with Google in an effort to protect presumably unscrupulous users from accidentally stumbling upon sites that they seem to think will maliciously install software on your system (or, at least, try to).  Seeing a few of my tabs load with a “NO” icon instead of what I would normally expect was quite a shock as these sites it had flagged are not any that I’ve ever considered particularly malicious.  (I’ve been accessing them with no issues for some time now, though my continued use of Adblock Plus and No Script may be the reason for my lack of suspicious activity).

My initial thought was that a random addon would be the cause of this alert, but upon clicking the “Why was this site blocked?” button, I was surprised to see the real answer

Review:Burnout Paradise Big Surf Island: Is it worth it?

June 16th, 2009

Most games a year and a half old are long forgotten about. Well, Criterion Games are refusing to let that happen to their flagship title “Burnout Paradise.” It first started with free updates being released throughout the year of the game’s release. Adding significant gameplay enhancements including new events, day/night cycle and even bikes for the first time ever in the Burnout series.

Then starting in February 2009, Criterion started it’s “premium DLC” support for the game, releasing the “party pack.” An offline “pass the controller” mini-game collection for roughly $10.00. In the months following, more premium DLC was released adding new cars with game changing characteristics and new online modes.

But, the premium DLC was met with criticism because of the prices. New car add-ons ranged from $7.99 to $12.99 and new game modes were $9.99. So when the Big Surf Island was announced many were bracing themselves for a huge blow to their bank account balance. But, after playing the Big Surf Island DLC I’m pleased to say its worth every penny of the roughly $12.99.

Big Surf Island

Big Surf is the first DLC to add a new location to Paradise City and it’s completely different from what was available to the player before. After the download you’re immediately greeted with a half finished bridge leading to your new stomping grounds. Your also in a brand new car named the “Dust Storm Buggy” which is a total joy to drive because of it’s insane handling. The main difference of the island is the amount of places to do tricks. Huge jumps let you get more airtime than ever was possible before. As listed on Criterion’s site, here’s what is offered in the add-on:

  • The Dust Storm Buggy available to drive straight away
  • 8 Incredible New Cars to Win
  • 15 Events (Including all New Island Tours)
  • 10 Freeburn Challenges
  • 12 New Roads to Rule
  • 75 Island Smashes
  • 45 Island Billboards
  • 15 Island Mega Jumps

Completing all that is offered in Big Surf took me about 7 hours, including “ruling” all the new roads. I’ve recently finished full retail priced games that came way under the 7 hour mark. I would recommend starting off with the island tour event types because they will show you many highlights of the island. There are only 10 online Freeburn challenges, but they’re highly inventive. I found myself doing them twice. Trying to figure how to get an out of each billboard is just as satisfying as before. Smashing those billboards will unlock one of the highest points in Big Surf–the brand new cars. Without ruining the surprises, lets just say that these cars alone could have been sold at $9.99 when compared to previous DLC prices.

The total playtime and cars are what left me with the impression of value. Never did I think I had paid too much, which was my main worry going into the add-on. If you’re going to buy only one DLC pack for Burnout Paradise, this is the obvious choice. My only small criticism is that the ninth car unlock requires you to complete all 500 online Freeburn challenges, a task that is nearly impossible to complete. The retail game is now less than $20.00 add $12.99 for Big Surf you’re looking at the greatest value of this console generation thus far. Buy it Now!

Review: Plants vs Zombies – (brain) Bite-sized gaming

June 12th, 2009
plants-vs-zombies.jpg

It’s been about two weeks now since we’ve installed and been playing Popcap’s newest hit – Plants vs Zombies! and over those weeks, many hours have been spent vigilantly growing a monster garden to defend my house (and brain) from a never ending zombie onslaught.  As with their previous hits, most recently, Peggle, Popcap has pulled through again delivering a great game that can be played in short bursts and is full of humor, clever graphics and classic Popcap-style music.

Verizon and iPhone…Wishful Thinking or Reality?

June 5th, 2009

11529_large

A rumor that has been floating around for probably more than a year, but has started to gain more hype, is the possibility that Apple may come out with a new iPhone with Verizon.

Stop right there.  If any of you felt your heart race after hearing of the rumor or just reading this now for the first time, welcome friends!  In an age where we want everything at the touch of a finger, the iPhone is a very handy gadget.  Most smartphones are for that matter.  (Of course the iPhone apps are one of the reasons that Apple had no real competitor other than Blackberry.)

The iPhone, even in some of our generation’s dimmest times, was still increasing sales.  With the App Store, the iPhone can be transformed into anything you want it to be really.  Being someone who is fairly attached to her laptop, I will sometimes drag it out just to check on some news or tweet or play a game.  This isn’t a pain at all, but thinking about just doing it on the iPhone, I begrudge other people’s iPhone joy.  It seems to be the perfect mini-laptop when taking a laptop out just isn’t as practical as it used to be.  In a world where netbooks are selling like mad and laptops are selling much more than desktops, the iPhone fits in well.

He Remembers It, So You Don’t Have to.

By Thomas Mates

If you still pine for the days when Saved by the Bell was still on the air and it was worth it to wake up early for Saturday morning cartoons then you have probably heard of the Nostalgia Critic, on ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com. Every Wednesday, the Nostalgia Critic updates his site with reviews of movies and television shows most twenty-somethings grew up with. The Nostalgia Critic in real life is Chicago native Douglas Walker, 27.

Walker was a film major at NIU, Northern Illinois University. “I was actually going to go into film for a living, but the more I grew up the more I realized that I’d probably have to deal with Hollywood and I’m not really a huge fan of Hollywood,” said Walker.

After college Walker made a living doing illustration and design. He then started his career on the internet through YouTube. “I started posting these five second movies; they were like famous movies reduced down to five seconds… those seemed to catch on really big time on the YouTube community.”
