Exhumed Films

Recently, there’s been a decline in the number of horror movies on the big screen. But Philadelphians who still love fake blood have Exhumed Films. Exhumed puts together screenings of classic horror and grind house films using 35 and 16mm prints, not DVDs. Some of the films Exhumed has screened include horror classics like Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead 2, and John Carpenter’s  The Thing.

Exhumed Films was founded in 1997 in Blackwood, NJ, by “Four jerks who sort of were friendly with each other (and) wanted to see if we could show two films at a theater,” said Joseph Gervasi, 38, Exhumed Films co-founder with  Dan Fraga, Harry Guerro, and Jesse Nelson.

“We procured these two film prints, these 35mm prints, and we figured, at worst, we’d be watching these two movies by ourselves, and at best, maybe a few people would come out,” recalled Gervasi. To the group’s surprise many people did show up to their event.

“We didn’t really have the mass penetration of the internet,” he said. “We didn’t really have that resource to get the word out.”

Exhumed Films has gone through several theaters for screenings.

“They’ve all [the theaters] just successively closed down around our feet,” said Gervasi. Exhumed Films currently calls the International House, located at 3701 Chestnut St. in Philadelphia, home.  It’s a real step-up.

According to Gervasi some of their previous venues were “dilapidated, and they had bugs and rats running around.”

Though Exhumed has a great ongoing relationship with International House, it is difficult to do monthly events there, because of the theater’s other commitments and bookings. However, Exhumed still manages to hold double features there, “about every other month or so.”

They also conduct a once-a-year, 24-hour horror marathon. Now entering its third year, the marathon allows Exhumed to showcase some of their rarest prints.  “Many of the prints come from the collection of one of the group members, Harry Guerro,” said Gervasi.

Guerro is part of a network of print collectors and traders, which include people such as Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese. “Whatever he doesn’t personally own, may be owned by Exhumed Films, or he would be able to trade with other people to barrow the prints to run,” continued Gervasi. The network in which Guerro does his trading allows Exhumed access to several rare prints from around the world.

Some of the films shown at the 24-hour event may never end up being screened outside the context of the marathon.  This is because of the films’ levels of obscurity. Were they to be put into one of Exhumed’s regular events, they more than likely would not be able to stand on their own merits.

“If we put them into our 24-hour show, where people don’t even know what they’re [going to be] seeing, because we never ever announce what the films are going to be… then people … wind up seeing something that they wouldn’t normally  gravitate towards.”

The reason for not allowing the audience to know in advance the titles of the films is both practical, and helps add to the fun of the occasion.

“I think if the people knew what they were seeing they would pick and choose and chart when they were going to be there,” explained Gervasi. “It creates a sense of excitement where you have no idea what you’re going to see.”

In addition to several feature length movies, there are also several shorts and trailers between films. The lack of advance knowledge also prevents the audience from missing out on some of these smaller gems.

“Hopefully you [the audience] trust us well enough to allow yourself to be surprised by what we’re going to screen to you,” continued Gervasi.

This year’s 24-hour marathon is on Oct. 24 and 25. Tickets for the event are on sale at www.exhumedfilms.com/24hrfest. Tickets are $25 each.

Though Exhumed Films does charge for their events, the founders do not take any profits. Gervasi and Nelson own a for profit side business, Diabolik DVD, which always has a stand at Exhumed screenings to sell DVDs.

Any money made by Exhumed goes into a kitty used for buying new prints and the other costs of running the films.

“When we all decide we hate each other [the members of Exhumed] and disband we’ll break up that money and we’ll have a hundred bucks each,” said Gervasi jokingly.

The Apple Tablet – Coming Soon?

July 31st, 2009

apple_tabletThere are tons of rumors running the mill lately about the tablet that Apple would be releasing. At first, I honestly thought it would be a bad idea but the more I thought about it, I personally wouldn’t mind having one. The idea that Apple would be making a tablet has been circulating for more than 5 years, which makes me think that if this many rumors are coming out about it releasing, it’s a pretty good chance that we will see this tablet within 2009.

Facebook Apps – The next best/worst thing?

July 27th, 2009

2009-02-18_03-04-43_facebook

Facebook Apps – if you are like me than you have no idea how you got into even playing with these apps… I normally only use Facebook for keeping in touch with college friends. However, I see these as a new way to stagger through my work day.  Some of these apps are meant to just take your mind off of what you were currently doing and waste a little bit of time.  Others are so addictive that you just find yourself now checking your Facebook for updates with these apps and freak out because your co-worker or some friend you haven’t seen in 3 years just beat your Chain Rxn score by 32 million…and you need to sit in an imaginary bubble for just 10 minutes while you try and beat this gloriously high score…I’ve been there already.

1) Farm Town and Farmville (they are both basically the same): Pretty self explanatory, you plant seeds and trees and watch them grow. Then you harvest and sell them for money. The more you plant and harvest, the more experience you receive and then higher your level will be. You can also get animals and fences, buildings, the list goes on. You can also send plants and animals to your friends for their farms. The only down side I have yet to see is you either check your farm too late and have to delete the withered left overs or wait 3 days for your corn/wheat to grow, some plants take 4 hours and some take 3 days.

2) Chain Rxn: This is a super-massive addictive game, no lie. The object of the game is to click anywhere on the screen to start a chain reaction of balls as they bump into the other balls that have explodedfrom the initial ball. The longer the chain goes, the higher the score for each ball that bumps into another exploded ball. I have nothing bad to say about this except that it is the new crack, it’s that addictive.

3) Mafia Wars: I cannot really review this only because I have never played it, though I am going to review it now because it was the first app that made me cringe at using any other app. I used to have about 40+ new updates about my friends’ Mafia and always got invites to join the crew. I am sure that within the next few months, I will probably give up and join. I am a lemming…

4) Bejeweled Blitz: Come on, my generation and even those who may be a little bit older certainly remember the game Bejeweled. I would play that game like it was then end of the world, if I even turned my head away, the Earth would face certain horrifying death. Yeah, I know, I had issues. Either way, Bejeweled Blitz on Facebook is basically Bejeweled 2 with a 1 minute time frame, thats pretty much it. I adamantly tried to burst all of your bubbles there to save you the annoyance, because that is what happened to me.

Hopefully, this little tidbit of highly important information will either have you interested in playing with some of these Facebook apps (there are a TON more out there.)  If you do happen to get into most of the apps I mentioned…send me something for my farm…please…

Wordpress Upgrades FTL

July 13th, 2009

Sorry to everyone who may have encountered some of our recent downtime; I have upgraded our Wordpress install and a few of the addons were not compatible ( I know, I should have checked) namely Redirection and Tweet This.  Redirection has been updated by the author, Tweet This has not (notice the lack of “Tweet this” buttons at the bottom of posts).

Everything SEEMS to be back up and running.  If anyone notices a quirk or two, do let me know!

Privacy matters in public affairs

June 29th, 2009

Mars and Venus PeaceMedia coverage jumps on political scandals, especially when sex is involved. Public interest is so focused on the emotional feed of what we identify as celebrities. It’s natural then for popular interest to leech onto powerful emotional secrets of our entrusted elected officials. I think privacy matters when it comes to public affairs. Former governors Spitzer(D-NY) and Sanford (R-SC) blow up in news feed as medication to the mass that we as a people are far from perfect. The question on my mind: who are any of us to judge? Former governor Blagojevich (D-IL) also got tons of media coverage in his bribery attempts. Drawing a line between the two is arbitrary as sex, money, and drugs are so closely related. Politicians also feel obligated to step down from office when shit hits the fan. It can be difficult to recover from political tensions that weigh down strong enough to cut legal ties. Affairs are definitely a troublesome matter, but this becomes a private matter. The public can definitely push to manage personal emotions better rather than dive into the realm of officials. Remember that our emotional ties with political figures runs as a ballot cast. There are better stories to tell in this world such as stories about individuals who achieve positively. Integrity runs high which might make a resignation feel appropriate, but our judicial system allows for courts to decide guilty or innocent. A marital affair is the emotional burden of a family unit. The national media can stay far away from coverage, and let the state, family, and individuals heal on their own terms. There are psychologists to help with emotional wounds. Individuals serving in group function move much farther than outsiders latching onto the emotions of others.

The New York State capitol is chaotic right now. Republicans and democrats act in huddle as Governor Patterson casts blame on the two groups. It can also be added that Patterson has the lowest approval rating of any New York State governor since the establishment of these same ratings. I understand that it’s often times difficult to reach agreement, but I think a better method of political micromanagement will bring about a compromise. If politicians and the public tune into higher understanding of emotional psychology, both as individuals and in group function, forward progress can again be made. When we reach into ourselves instead of others, the greatest depths of energy are reached. Leave it to libertarian belief to sell Albany what’s good. New York is a great state and amazing things happen here. I just think Spitzer staying in office after his personal scandal is better for the current State of New York and its residents than Patterson’s current blame game.

We can all forget about it and move on. We all have history. The courts can decide if a politician is unfit to serve to benefit the greater good. A resignation in my opinion is a cry for attention. We are human, and we make mistakes. We can serve ourselves better for higher function if we all keep cool and chill out. A social leech sucks the life out from any party. We can govern ourselves, but popular belief in western culture chooses to latch on to others for emotional energy and money. This may be what separates socialist-liberals from neo-conservatives. It’s going to take more energy to heal our own psychological wounds than we can get from comfort in a shallow bay.

MuchCast: Episode 1 – Set it Off

April 13th, 2009

muchcast2Co-Founders Chris, Dan and Kevin along with special guest, Kyle,  got together at MuchGeek HQ on Saturday night (Apr. 11, 2009) to record MuchGeek.com’s first podcast.

The name of the show is MuchCast. It seemed like a fitting name for the show. Goes with the whole site theme.

Some of the topics discussed on this podcast are the mission of our site and podcast, hacking HTC’s G1 Android phone, Seth Rogen’s newest comedy “Observe and Report”, Kyle’s review of the Korg R3 keyboard/synthesisor along with much much much more random banter.

Enjoy kids!

MuchGeek is live!!

April 13th, 2009

muchgeeklogosmall-1

That’s right, and much sooner than expected!  MuchGeek is here, live and ready to bring the thunder.  Or at least the tech news and stories that we find interesting.. whichever comes first.

Thanks, first of all, to everyone who has been helping us get the site off the ground; we’ve already started to develop a solid community of like-minded individuals who all bring something awesome to the table, and there’s every reason to believe that what we are doing here has the potential and ability to become a strong resource and destination for everyone living the life of a geek (or at least trying to keep up to date with the world of tech).

If you haven’t already, stop by the Forums and see what’s going on, leave us a message.  We’re still happy to talk to new people who are interested in contributing stories or, really, anything to the site.  Obviously a new logo is in the works and hopefully there will be something better out soon, what I’ve put up there is just a bit of a place holder (edit: changed to a newer image.. a bit nicer, thoughts?).  Same for the theme here, while it’s nice and sleek it doesn’t full fit the feel or provide the identity that we’re looking for for the long run.

Thanks again for stopping by, now it’s time to get to work on keeping up with making something that you will want to come back to every day for the stories, community and just the experience!
